A tragic fire broke out early Sunday at 308 West Front Street in Plainfield, New Jersey, taking the lives of two parents and displacing 90 residents.
The blaze ignited around 1:15 a.m., quickly turning the building’s top-floor unit into an inferno and forcing a rapid evacuation of all 24 apartments.
Amid smoke-filled hallways, neighbors like Shaira Aviles rushed to save their families, while two children—ages 17 and 11—escaped the deadly flames.
With help from building superintendent Hugo Fernandez, the children found warmth and safety as paramedics worked to aid their injured parents.
Mayor Adrian O. Mapp assured that the city and school district are committed to supporting affected families, with the Red Cross opening a shelter at Plainfield Performing Arts Center and local groups organizing donation drives.

Shen Rosen, a talented 20-year-old artist from Plainfield, is drawing crowds with her new exhibition, “In Between: Expressions of Liminal Spaces,” at Galeria - The Art Venue in Westfield.
The show, which opened November 15, showcases 20 vibrant oil-on-canvas pieces that explore themes of transition and emotional uncertainty.
Rosen uses painting as a powerful outlet to express a range of feelings, capturing moments that resonate with viewers on a deeply personal level.
Community support has been strong, as evidenced by nine artworks sold before Thanksgiving, according to gallery owner Carlos Cruz.
Grateful for the enthusiastic local response, Rosen acknowledges her family, fellow artists, and the Plainfield community for their encouragement and support.

Plainfield’s Neighborhood House Association is gearing up for its annual Holiday Train Ride on Saturday, December 6, 2025, a cherished tradition for over 20 years.
This festive event brings the magical journey of Santa and his elf volunteers to local families, departing the Plainfield Train Station at 10:13 AM and traveling west to Raritan before returning.
Last year saw more than 200 enthusiastic participants, with many high school students volunteering, and hopes are high to draw even more in 2025.
Tickets are on sale, while donations—both monetary and toy gifts—are warmly welcomed until December 31, directly supporting the Neighborhood House’s outreach.

Gustavo Rosas Plata, a youth soccer coach from North Plainfield, faces charges after allegedly assaulting a 16-year-old player during a tense match at the Warinanco Sports Center in Roselle.
The incident, which occurred October 19, 2025, unfolded at a game between North Plainfield Soccer Elite and Elizabeth Youth Soccer. According to witnesses, after an Elizabeth player fell near the sideline, Plata reportedly kicked the teenager.
After reviewing witness statements and video, the Union County Police Department charged Plata with fourth-degree simple assault at a youth sports event. Plata was processed and released, awaiting a court appearance.
This situation adds to rising concerns over adult behavior at local youth sports events. Community voices are urging stronger oversight and tougher penalties to protect young athletes and maintain a safe, respectful environment.
