Road closure notice and traffic updates for Plainfield, New Jersey |
Updates on the bridge replacement project and traffic detour route |
Plainfield, New Jersey residents should prepare for upcoming road closures and detours as part of a significant bridge replacement project.
Starting Monday, March 2, 2026, the Gaston Road Bridge will be closed to through traffic for approximately three months to facilitate the replacement of the aging structure.
The bridge, located just north of Jonathan Smith Road, spans a tributary to the Whippany River and has been deemed structurally deficient.
During the closure, residents south of the bridge can access their neighborhoods via Washington Valley Road, while those north of the bridge should use Sussex Turnpike.
A marked detour will redirect southbound motorists from Gaston Road to Washington Valley Road, then to Schoolhouse Lane and Mount Pleasant Road, leading back to Sussex Turnpike.
The existing bridge, a concrete slab with stone masonry abutments, has undergone multiple repairs over the years.
Due to its deteriorating condition, a complete replacement is considered the most practical solution.
The new structure will feature a four-sided, precast design with stone-faced walls and a picket-style railing.
Construction is scheduled to begin on March 2, 2026, with completion expected in three months.
The $641,487 project is being managed by CMS Construction, Inc. of Plainfield, N.J.
Residents are advised to plan their commutes accordingly and stay informed about potential traffic delays.
For real-time updates, motorists can call 511, visit 511nj.org, or use the SafeTripNJ app.
These resources provide travel alerts and live camera views to assist in navigating the detour routes.
While the construction may cause temporary inconvenience, the bridge replacement is essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of the local infrastructure.
Community members are encouraged to stay updated and plan their travel routes accordingly during this period. |
