South Plainfield is celebrating its 100th anniversary by launching a unique essay contest for local students, inviting high schoolers and those in grades 7 and 8 to reflect on the borough’s motto: Vision – Family – Industry.
Students are encouraged to share how this motto impacts them personally, its influence on the town’s foundation, and its ongoing relevance.
Entries must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on March 9, 2026.
Winners will be honored by Borough Clerk Amy Antonides and local officials on April 6 at Borough Hall, with top winners receiving gift cards valued at $150, $100, and $75 in each age group.

Plainfield, New Jersey residents are urged to prepare for major travel changes as the Gaston Road Bridge replacement project begins on March 2, 2026.
The bridge, just north of Jonathan Smith Road and spanning a Whippany River tributary, will close for roughly three months due to its structural deficiencies.
During this closure, those living south of the bridge should use Washington Valley Road, while northern residents are advised to access via Sussex Turnpike.
A marked detour will guide traffic along Washington Valley Road, Schoolhouse Lane, Mount Pleasant Road, and back to Sussex Turnpike.
The replacement, managed by CMS Construction, Inc. and valued at $641,487, features a modern precast span with stone-faced walls and new railings.
Motorists are encouraged to use 511NJ resources for real-time detour and traffic updates.
